If so, why not try the weekly ParkLife Job Club, meeting every Monday* 1pm to 3pm at the ParkLife Community Room in St.James' Park?
We'd love to hear from anyone who is not currently in paid employment and is job seeking, who'd like to join the club. The value of the club is a bit like a slimming club - you can do this on your own but it's easier with support, encouragement, and the knowledge that next week you're going to have to tell people how you've got on.
As well as applications, the Job Club offers help with CV writing. Very often we aren't great at selling ourselves because we don't recognise our own talents: another person is much better at doing that for us.
For our second session on Monday 25th February, David Phillips from Southampton Action For Employment (SAFE) was due to come along to talk about their Choices programme: a five‑week, two days a week course particularly helpful for people whose confidence may be low because they've been looking for work for a while.
In future weeks some local employers will be coming to talk about their opportunities. We want to offer interview practice and would like to hear from anyone who could offer help with that, by running mock interviews or being on a mock interview panel, or who could support CV writing and application form filling. If you'd be able to help in this way, please contact our Community Coordinator, Jan Carr, on 07525 855926.

Learn 2 Love Planning Day - Tuesday 19th March 2013
In March, in preparation for the Learn 2 Love Learning Club, we held a Planning Day at the ParkLife Community Room for volunteers to find out more about the club and to help plan activities.
Food Safety Training - Wednesdays 6th & 13th March 2013

In March 2013, we organised a two‑day accredited Food Safety Training course, provided by TWICS, at the ParkLife Community Room. The course was FREE for people looking to volunteer in the ParkLife Café at St.James' Park, and for people looking for café work experience to support their job search. |

A total of 14 people attended the course, 10 of them potential FoSJP volunteers.
Craft Workshop - Tuesday 26th February 2013
![]() |
In February 2013, we organised a free Craft Workshop, provided by the WEA,
to provide training for volunteers with an interest in supporting adults to learn new skills in a new
Learn 2 Love Learning club that will be starting in April,
on Tuesday mornings, aimed at supporting learners who may have a specific learning difficulty,
be returning to learning after some time, or have recently had a significant life change. Kate Woodley‑Smith taught nine participants some decoupage techniques in 2 hours that flew by. See our Craft Workshop report for a full illustrated report. |
Five people from this course signed up for the Planning meeting on Tuesday 19th March.
| If you missed the Craft Workshop but like the idea of helping people grow in confidence by learning new skills, as well as learning new skills yourself, and would like to come to the Planning meeting (with lunch), please contact our Community Coordinator, Jan Carr, via jan.carr@fosjp.org.uk or 07525 855926. |
ParkLife Job Club - 18th February 2013
We were really pleased with the turnout for the first session of the ParkLife Job Club. Eight people came along, some took advantage of the free "Job Club Special" lunch that Paul at the ParkLife Café provided, and then from 1pm everyone got stuck into job applications for advertisements found in The Daily Echo, various Council job bulletins, and Job Centre sites.
Job Workshop - September 2012
In September 2012, FoSJP teamed up with Totton College to organise a FREE job‑related workshop at the ParkLife Community Room, with advice on personal skills assessment, where to look for jobs, how to approach interviews, and more.
Unfortunately, we didn't get enough participants registering an interest for this event to go ahead, so it had to be cancelled.
Food Safety in Catering - April 2012
FoSJP teamed up with TWICS (Training for Work in Communities) to help some of our volunteers achieve a Food Safety in Catering Level 2 accreditation, via a 2‑day course held at Wordsworth Infant School on Mondays 23rd and 30th April.
This course was aimed at volunteers and part‑time staff who cook for the community. We're very grateful to TWICS for offering us these subsidised spaces; FoSJP paid the remaining fee of £15 for people who could either volunteer in the ParkLife Café or bake a cake for one of our events, such as The Big Event in July 2012.
